RUD THYGESEN & JOHNNY SØRENSEN
Rud Thygesen & Johnny Sørensen are both Danish designers from the 20th century. They worked a lot together, creating some of the most beautiful furniture of Danish design. They are most of all known for their pièces in laminated wood.
RUD THYGESEN & JOHNNY SØRENSEN : STORY OF A COLLABORATION
They both graduated from the Danish School of Arts, Crafts and Design in 1966. The same year, they opened their own design studio. They tcreated functional and aesthetically pleasing furniture, using laminated wood as their main material. Their work was a complete success, and they exposed their furniture in worldwide museums and won some design awards. They worked with a very famous furniture maker, Magnus Olesen, who produced many of their pieces.
They decided to close their studio in 1995, after thirty years of collaboration, and pursued solo careers. As we deplore the recent death of Rud Thygesen last 1st January, Johnny Sørensen still lives in Denmark. He is now 75 years old.
THE GOLDEN AGE OF DANISH DESIGN
With some others Danish designers, Rud Thygesen & Johnny Sørensen contributed to the Golden Age of Danish Design, from the 50’s to the 60’s. Many pieces of theirs are still sold worldwide, as for example this typical sofa with its coffee table. Composed of eight modules and covered with blue wool, this vintage furniture are rare nowadays and very sought after by design lovers. Another fine example of their work would be this table in cherry wood, lacquered on the work top, as functional as aesthetically pleasing. The shapes of the table are originals, reminding a bit the work of Johannes Andersen, another Danish designer. Other furniture, created by them, are now exposed in Museums in Copenhagen, Oslo, London and the Modern Art Museum of New York.
